Studio FAQ
Questions about our Studio or how our classes run? Our most frequently asked questions can be found here.
What is CDT’s Mission Statement?
We are here to provide a positive environment where young people are encouraged to explore and develop their creativity through the art of dance.”

What does this mean?
We believe each student has winning attributes and value regardless of individual skill. We provide an intentional environment where children can be comfortable to express themselves and communicate their emotions through movement and dance. Our students develop self-confidence, dance technique, self-awareness, leadership qualities, and coordination while having fun and feeling successful.
Why are the classes age-based?
Because we are a non-competitive studio, we do not want to create an environment where a child’s success is based solely on skill. While in each class there will be students who are naturally more or less advanced than the others, our classes are made up of students in the same age range rather than based on ability. We find that they thrive best in an environment of their peers, with the more advanced students having the opportunity to learn leadership skills. Our teachers are trained to adapt their curriculum to fit the current needs of their students.
Why do certain classes have prerequisites?
While our classes are age-based, there are a couple of exceptions. Classes like Acro and Pointe involve skills that are necessary to have mastered before moving on. The reason - safety. In these classes, lacking the proper skills and training can affect either the safety of the individual or the safety of the group. The guidelines are set forth in the registration packet.
Do I have to stay during my child’s class?
Nope! Many of our parents drop off and pick up after class. For those that want to stay and watch the class, we have our chairs and back area for waiting families. For those dropping off, make sure to be back before the end of class! We cannot watch your children for you outside of scheduled class time.

How many kids are in each class?
Depending on the level and the age of the students, our class sizes range from 6 - 18.

What is the dress code?
The dress code and requirements for each class can be found on the website. In general, we do not allow exposed midriffs, short shorts, jeans, crocs, uggs, or any type of clothing or accessory that will be a distraction while dancing. Read the specifics here.

What Can I Expect at my Child's First Class?
First off, welcome! When you and your child arrive, please do your best to snag the attention of your instructor who will help the dancer participate in the first activity. Many of the younger classes begin in a circle on the floor for attendance/songs or stretching exercises whereas older classes may get to dancing warm-ups right away. Families are welcome to observe class from the chairs, the back room, or through the window. Dancers should bring a water bottle and come appropriately attired with the proper footware for their first class, details for which can be found here.
We encourage you to arrive about 10 minutes early to your first class. For younger dancers especially, this gives them a chance to get a feel for the space before class which typically helps them feel more comfortable participating when class begins!
Should I be concerned about the fact that CDT is currently housing 19 alligators?
Yes. And no. Luckily, all of our alligators are pretend, so they can’t really eat dancer toes. What’s not pretend is the very real image in our dancers’ minds of a physical object to leap over — so please, feel free to play along!
When is the studio closed?
CDT closes for San Diego Unified's long breaks. You can view these details on our Calendar Page.
